Hello and Welcome!

John Goodrow and Gwyn Goodrow Crochet Getaway

Get to know all about us! I’m Gwyn, founder and primary publisher of Crochet Getaway, a travel and crafting blog. Thanks for taking the time to look around my site. On Crochet Getaway, you’ll find travel adventures to destinations near and far, along with spices of life in the form of DIY projects, yarn crafting, and textile artwork finds.

My husband, John, is the brain behind the technology of this website.  He shares travel, history, and knitting articles on the site, too.

Background Info About Us

My passions for travel and crafting date back to my childhood. I read my grandmother’s well-worn National Geographic magazines, fascinated by the beautiful photos of faraway places, and spent hours pondering maps and the special inserts.

My mother taught me to crochet, and my teen years were a creative time when I played with printed patterns, complicated stitches, and designed with yarn, fabric, and other textiles. Both of my grandmothers were crocheters and quilters. Along with my mother, they encouraged my love of crafting.

Those lasting memories are central to the energy of this blog and my understanding of how travel and crafting make the world a community of friends.

In the Beginning…A Brief History of Crochet Getaway

In 2015, I wanted to spend the year re-connecting to my childhood hobbies. I started this blog because of my frustration in seeking a central location for information about crochet events and seminars near me. I completed a class on website development and discovered a new hobby – blogging!

What began as a place to organize and share information about crochet gatherings has evolved in ways I never imagined.

Here’s More About Us ~ When Traveling:

As travelers, John and I are open to every experience. In our corporate careers, business travel usually means an overnight stay in an urban area with chain hotels and chain restaurants.

However, when traveling on our own, we might stay in a rustic cabin at a state park or in an RV and enjoy the quiet of nature while cooking on a grill with food from a local farmer’s market. Not only do we enjoy relaxing in secluded nature settings, but we also enjoy luxury experiences.

You’ll sometimes find us vacationing at a spa resort and feasting on multi-course meals. We’re comfortable in many environments, which is something I love about us and how we show up for our customers. Each experience is an escapade.

When I travel, I am on the lookout for textile uses – the practical and the artistry. The culture of a place is intertwined with the use of threads, yarns, and fabric. While John may focus on history and how a place evolved through time, I’ll be watching for regional textile designs and how local crafters operate their businesses.

We’ll bring you these stories, and we love to hear about your similar (and contrasting) experiences!
