Local Shop Review – Knit1 Oxford in Mississippi

Knit1 Oxford is today’s local shop review. One of the things that I most like about this shop is the local product selections!  Check out their website and store blog. Located in North Mississippi, Oxford is home to the University of Mississippi and the Ole Miss Rebels sports teams.  Nearby, the homeplace of William Faulkner is a key tourist attraction. Built in 1848, Faulkner purchased the home in 1930 and named it for the Celtic legend of the Rowan tree.

The “Trees for Life” website states “The rowan’s mythic roots go back to classical times. Greek mythology tells of how Hebe the goddess of youth, dispensed rejuvenating ambrosia to the gods from her magical chalice. When, through carelessness, she lost this cup to demons, the gods sent an eagle to recover the cup. The feathers and drops of blood which the eagle shed in the ensuing fight with the demons fell to earth, where each of them turned into a rowan tree. Hence the rowan derived the shape of its leaves from the eagle’s feathers and the appearance of its berries from the droplets of blood”.

While living in Oxford, Faulkner published numerous stories, including As I Lay Dying, Absalom, Absalom!, Light in August, and A Fable. Faulkner died in 1962. The house is now owned by the University and is open for scheduled tours.

Another highly rated local yarn shop!

I met Knit1 Oxford at the Magnolia State Fiber Festival. I have not visited the store location in north Mississippi, but the booth was extensive at the event. I was looking for a shawl idea and purchased a beautiful tiered pattern, very reasonably priced. I did not purchase yarn, but was offered several suggestions for appropriate drape and still have my notes from my discussion with the Knit1 Oxford staff at the event. The guidance was excellent and demonstrated the care they take with new customers.

While the store name indicates that its a knitting shop, this is a go-to location for Crochet classes – beginner or advanced! The current classes on the schedule are taught by Katie Clark, an experienced crochet teacher who is also a member of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi.
